Understanding Aphasia, a Loss of Speech Ability

Bradley DiTeresi is a professional in Kansas City who has undertaken successful international real estate investments. Community focused, Bradley DiTeresi supports a number of charitable organizations, including the Lupus Foundation of America and the Alzheimer's Association. One of the unique aspects of the latter organization is the way it reaches out to people in various communities through educational programming.

An example of its efforts has been an April 2021 virtual program, “When Our Words Fail Us.” This invited attendees to explore the ways in which dementia sometimes goes beyond loss of memory and encompasses aphasia, or the loss of the ability to express and understand speech. Among the symptoms of aphasia are difficulty reading and writing, holding a conversation, understanding directions, and naming objects that start with certain letters.

With oral communication vitally important for social interaction, the condition can rob people of their ability to connect with others and lead to a sense of heightened isolation. The positive news is that the onset of aphasia is gradual, which allows for early intervention programs that can help engage people and slow down its progression. Among the therapeutic approaches available are speech therapy, as well as melodic intonation therapy. This therapy involves singing or humming in rhythm in ways that stimulate activity in the brain’s right hemisphere.
